Photographing a couple in Le Havre means playing with the light off the sea and an architecture that looks you straight in the eye.

Andréa and Steven trusted me with a couple session in Le Havre, in Seine-Maritime. A singular city in Normandy — between the estuary and the Channel, between the concrete of the post-war reconstruction and an Atlantic light that shifts every ten minutes. Not an obvious backdrop for a couple session — and that is precisely why it is interesting.

Le Havre has a quality of light found nowhere else in Normandy. Harder than the light of Saint-Lô, whiter than the light of the Manche coast, at times theatrical when a storm threatens out at sea. For a couple, it is a playground that pushes you to be present, to truly look at each other, to stand against something.

Based in Saint-Lô in the Manche, I regularly work across Seine-Maritime for couple sessions, weddings and reportage. Le Havre, Rouen, Étretat, Honfleur — Upper Normandy offers photographic landscapes of remarkable variety, from chalk cliffs to industrial harbours, from beech forests to Atlantic beaches.

A couple session is neither a wedding nor a reportage. It is a more intimate, freer moment, where the pace slows down. No tight schedule, no guests to manage — just two people and a photographer trying to capture what lies between them.

With Andréa and Steven, we wandered through the city, following the light. No frozen poses, nothing imposed — just watching them live with one another, and pressing the shutter at the right moment.

A couple session
in Le Havre — what is it like?

A couple session in Le Havre is about two hours of walking, pauses and conversation. We choose a few locations in advance — the docks, the seafront, the Perret architecture, a less obvious neighbourhood — and move through them at the pace of the light. The images are not posed: they are glances, gestures, silences.

For Andréa and Steven, it was also a post-wedding session — a chance to take freer photographs, without the pressure of the big day, in a city that looks like them. A gift you give each other one year, two years, ten years after the wedding day.
