Putting the dress back on after the wedding, crossing the footbridge at sunset, and having Mont-Saint-Michel almost to yourselves. That is what an after-wedding session here feels like.
An after-wedding session — some call it a day-after, others plan the same thing as a pre-wedding shoot before the ceremony — is the couple session freed of everything: no guests waiting, no dinner schedule, no wedding-day nerves. The dress comes out of its box, and you choose a place that deserves time. That autumn evening, the place was Mont-Saint-Michel — at high tide, when the sea surrounds the rock and the crowds go home.
Everything in this session came down to two things I watch closely: the hour and the tide. The rest is just the two of them.
Arriving above the water
We crossed the footbridge as the sun went down, the sea already risen beneath the pilings. Two silhouettes above the light on the water, the train of the dress catching the last of it. This image only exists at that hour, at that tide — which is exactly why I plan sessions here around the tide table, not the other way round.
The staircases, the ramparts, the bay
The Mont is a machine of geometry: staircases, ramps, parapet walks. You climb, you stop, you climb again. And from the heights there is a view most visitors never take the time to see — the rampart towers standing in the sea.
That is where the photograph opening this article was made: the bride tiny on a corner of the parapet walk, her gown glowing against the dark stone, the immense bay all around. This image received a Fearless Award, one of the most demanding distinctions in wedding photography worldwide. It says exactly why this place has no equivalent — nowhere else does a wedding dress meet a setting of this scale.

Night falls, the Mont empties
After sunset, two things happen at Mont-Saint-Michel: the sky catches fire above the ramparts, and then the lanes empty out. The lanterns come on, the cobblestones shine, and a couple in wedding clothes can run through the Grande Rue as if the village belonged to them.
Why it works so well for visiting couples
On a wedding day, a couple session at Mont-Saint-Michel is nearly impossible — the drive, the crowds, the schedule. As an after-wedding or pre-wedding session, everything reverses. We pick the right date for the high tide, the right hour for the light, and we take our time: the footbridge, the heights, the sunset, the night.
