Atchi is a young French bulldog. Young — that's exactly the word. Everything about him says so: the boundless energy, the attention that lasts three seconds before darting off to something else, the ears that swivel at the faintest sound. A pet portrait session with a dog like him isn't a matter of poses. It's a matter of speed and patience — often both at once.

The session took place in a private garden in Saint-Lô, in the Manche. A space that was already his — his territory, his scents, his favourite corners. That's always where animals are most themselves. No need for a studio, no need for an artificial set: the Normandy light is enough, and Atchi's character does the rest.

An outdoor pet portrait is a particular kind of exercise. No studio light to control, no neutral backdrop. Just daylight, the grass, and a subject who decides for himself what he's going to do. With Atchi, you had to anticipate — to read the direction of his gaze a fraction of a second before he sprinted off to explore another corner of the garden.

Based in Saint-Lô, I travel for pet photo sessions throughout the Manche, the Calvados and Normandy — dog, cat, horse, or any other companion. Outdoors in your garden, in the open Normandy countryside, or in the studio depending on the look you're after. Every animal has a character — my job is to capture it.

French bulldogs have this knack for being both comical and deeply expressive. A grimace, a drooping ear, a sidelong glance — every image tells you something precise about who he is. Atchi is the tireless player, the one who keeps coming back towards the lens out of curiosity before tearing off again at full speed.

A pet portrait session in Saint-Lô or anywhere in the Manche is also about that: freezing a character in time. Ten years from now, these photos will say exactly how he was when he was young — that energy, that lightness, that quick-witted look.
